NIE Valenciahelp in plain English

If you lived here before the end of the transition

If the Withdrawal Agreement covers you, your TIE mentions it, and an old green certificate can be swapped for that card. It protects the rights you had before, so keep it valid and renew it in good time.

Moving over now

  • Short visits are limited, as for other non-EU visitors
  • Living here means a visa: the digital nomad visa if you work remotely for clients abroad, non-lucrative residence if you live from your means, a student visa for studies
  • After arrival comes the TIE, with fingerprints taken in Valencia
  • A NIE for a property purchase or a car can still be requested on its own

How we help

Whether you are swapping an old green certificate or arriving on a new visa, we prepare the forms, look for the appointment and tell you what the desk will want to see.

Here in Valencia

British residents in Valencia, and in the towns along the coast such as Alboraya, Sagunto and Gandia, deal with the same police desks as other non-EU residents: Calle de Bailén for the number and its certificates, the Comisaría de Patraix for cards. We check which one your case belongs to before you book.

Quick questions

Is my old green certificate still valid?

It still proves the registration it records, but the TIE under the Withdrawal Agreement is the document recommended for British residents. Exchanging it avoids questions at borders and banks.

Can I still use the EU registration route?

Not as a new arrival. Since Brexit it has been reserved for people holding an EU, EEA or Swiss passport, plus their relatives.

Can I buy a property with just a NIE?

Yes. Buying needs a NIE but not residence. Living here beyond a short stay is where the visa question begins.
